And classes are off!
These past two weeks have been mostly focused about building classroom community and learning the basics about each subject that I teach. For students in Drama class, they are focused learning the bare essentials of bringing a scene together on stage: playing with the dimensions of tone and voice in their lines, using projection in an auditorium, and using their body to create the interpretation and creativity of scene. Drama students will perform scenes that they've written from "builder lines" and apply these dimensions this week during class in the auditorium, also using their memorization techniques on stage. I can't wait to see what this group will bring! After performances, students will work on basics of performing and writing monologues, starting with improv rants. Media & Tech students have a unique approach to this class. Because the school provided the newest technology to students, a select group will participate in the 2016-17 Yearbook with Ms. Jackson during this period. With that, Media & Tech students have been working on the Jostens Yearbook flash design page to construct an "About Me" page that's due on Thursday, August 18. This is considered an "audition" to be selected for the class yearbook. Media & Tech students are also learning the basics of digital citizenship and building an online community. With social media, we're starting out using YouTube with students showing a "glimpse" into their lives within 60 seconds. After Yearbook projects, students will work on a larger-scale online video project with other classmates while learning about the importance of social video trends. Finally, Mr. Martinez and I are creating a very original class for Computer Science. Students are straddling between learning Python programming language online through Canvas, and understanding the history of computers in person. On Monday, August 15, students will have a quiz on figures of computer history, and tackle programming languages by creating a website and web application from scratch. Students are also learning the very basis of coding through binary coding in their bellwork. As always, if you have any questions then feel free to email me. With gratitude, Mrs. Constable Okay, okay... I know that the post title isn't in English. You're probably scratching your head or knitting your brows wondering what a Latin phrase has to do with Drama, Media & Technology, or Computer Science.
Well, magna est via consuetudnis means "great is the power of habit." And that's one of the best pieces of advice on how to weave a fulfilling, organized, and happy life. If you create positive habits and routines for yourself -- even when days seem spontaneous or random -- you will be a successful individual. With that, I am beyond pumped to start the school year by creating clear and confident routines with you. It's my hope that you will teach me more than I teach you. These are your elective classes, after all. What do you want to receive out of them? Each class is completely unique and will hopefully shape you to be a more authentic, risk-taking individual. For Drama, expect lots of writing and group collaboration; for Media & Technology, expect to brand yourself with an online portfolio that will set yourself apart online; and for Computer Science, get ready to program front- and back-end systems with the brilliant ASU Prep IT Tech Mr. Martinez and myself. For every class tab above, I will do my best to update documents that are handed out in class to individual classes. If you ever have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected] (yeah, the email kept my crazy Slovak maiden name from my days as a Sun Devil). But, please... reach out! For pop quizzes and extra credit (mainly in my Media & Technology class), I'll always be posting on my social media feeds which you'll see to the right of this page. I'll also be updating this blog on the front of my website every Friday. That way, you can keep posted on any happenings. Nervous for the first day of school? You're not the only one! See you guys and gals on Monday. Looking forward to getting to know each one of you. With gratitude, Mrs. Constable |
